HISTORY AND GOVERNANCE

The Connecticut State Golf Association (CSGA) functions as an extension of the USGA and provides stewardship for amateur golf in Connecticut. Founded in 1899, it is the country’s oldest state golf association and is based at Golf House in Rocky Hill where it shares offices with The Connecticut Section of the Professional Golf Association.

The Executive Committee of the CSGA consists of a President, three Vice Presidents, Secretary, Treasurer and special advisors.  The State is divided into five regions. In each region there is a Regional Vice President and two at-large representatives. And, at almost every club, there is a Club Representative who functions as the CSGA liaison at the club level.

The Board of Directors of the CSGA includes all members of the Executive Committee, the Executive Director, the 5 Regional Vice Presidents and 10 at-large Representatives, past Presidents of the CSGA and one representative each from The Connecticut Club Managers Association, The Connecticut Section of the PGA, The Connecticut Association of Golf Course Superintendents, The Connecticut Women’s Golf Association, The Southern New England Women’s Golf Association, and The Connecticut Golf Foundation d/b/a The First Tee of Connecticut.

MEMBERSHIP

The CSGA has 173 member clubs of which 81 are private. Of the 92 public facilities, 32 are owned by municipalities and 59 are privately owned public courses.

FINANCIAL

The CSGA is a non-profit 501(c) 6 organization. The four main sources of revenue for the CSGA are GHIN handicap fees, tournament fees, sponsorships and club dues.

CSGA SERVICES

- COMPUTERIZED HANDICAPPING: More than 48,000 golfers are served through the USGA’s Handicap System. The CSGA provides computer hardware and software support for all member clubs. An excellent education program in handicap and tournament administration, which provides for hands-on training for all member club personnel responsible for handicapping and tournaments as well as immediate in-house support for software and hardware issues. The CSGA, as a member of the International Golf Network (IGN), provides members the ability to post their scores from anywhere in North America and various other countries.

- eCLUBHOUSE: Member Clubs of the CSGA have the opportunity to use eClubhouse as a stand alone golf club web site or in addition to their existion web site.  This powerful tool allows direct access to a club's GHIN Handicap Information, the ability to broadcast email all members of a club, a tournament and event calendar for members to sign-up for club events, and the ability to post scores and track a member's statistics.

- COURSE RATING: Using the USGA’s course rating system, the course rating team provides this service free of charge to all member clubs across the state. In the process of rating a course, the team works very closely with the club pro and superintendent so that they in turn can accurately respond to questions from members regarding the rating. Ratings for women’s tees are handled separately by the CWGA or SNEWGA.  All course ratings are maintained by the CSGA.

- COURSE MEASURING and MARKING: Upon a clubs request, the CSGA will measure hole lengths and green sizes and provide technical advice and assistance on marking hazards, obstructions, out-of-bounds, etc. There is no charge for this service.

- EDUCATION: The CSGA conducts seminars on rules, handicaps and tournament administration.  Seminars are usually conducted from January through April.

- MAGAZINE: The CSGA publishes “The Connecticut Golfer” magazine periodically throughout the year. Unless specifically requested otherwise, 50 copies are sent to each club.  An increasing number of clubs are requesting that a sufficient number of copies be sent so that the club in turn can send one to each member, and the CSGA encourages this effort.

- GOVERNMENT RELATIONS: Very importantly, the CSGA communicates legislation that may affect the operations of golf clubs across Connecticut.

- WEB SITE:  www.csgalinks.org:  Designed and Maintained by HyperActive PC the CSGA web site provides extensive information concerning Connecticut golf. The CSGA was the first golf association to provide the ability to apply for tournaments online; tournament schedules (current and up-coming); information on our member clubs; tournament pairings and results; links to CSGA partners and other golf sites; all this is constantly updated and maintained directly through the CSGA office.

- AMATEUR STATUS REINSTATEMENT: In concert with the USGA, the CSGA examines individual applications for amateur status reinstatement.

- CONNECTICUT GOLF ALLIANCE:  The Connecticut Golf Alliance is comprised of representatives from the CSGA, the CT Section of the PGA, The First Tee of Connecticut, The Travelers Championship, the Connecticut Women's Golf Association, The Southern New England Women's Golf Association, The Connecticut Club Managers Association, Connecticut High Schools, Connecticut Colleges, Connecticut Association of Privately Owned Public Golf Courses and New England Public Links Association.

The mission of the Alliance is to promote the best interests of golf in the state, as well as protect, preserve, and grow the game.
