Szewczul Wins 4th Senior Match Play Championship
May
19, 2010 – After stroke play qualifying and four grueling match
play rounds the 4th Senior Match Play Champion has been
crowned. Dave Szewczul
from Tunxis Plantation Golf Course defeated Greg Karakashian from
Stanley Golf Course on the nineteenth hole to earn his sixth CSGA
major championship.
Szewczul’s
morning semifinal match was a rematch of the 1975 Connecticut
Amateur finals. William
Lee from The Course at Yale prevailed in that match but Dave would
get the best of him today. His
five and four victory put him into the finale against Greg
Karakashian. Greg
pulled away on the sixteenth hole in his morning semifinal to set
up an all past CT Amateur champion final match.
The
final match began with Greg Karakashian’s ball finding the trees
off the first tee. After
Dave Szewczul’s par putt was conceded at the first he would not
lead until extra holes. Karakashian
would par the second hole to move the match to all square.
After halving three holes in a row, Karakashian rolled in a
fifteen foot putt on six for his first lead of the day.
Greg would add to his lead on the 587 yard par five seventh
hole after knocking his third shot to five feet.
The
match would remain the same until Szewczul two putted from thirty
feet on the par three eleventh to get back to one down.
Fifteen, the other par three on the back nine, would prove
critical. After Dave
hit his tee ball twenty feet from the hole, Greg pulled his shot
into the left bunker. Karakashian
was unable to get up and down and after Dave made his third the
match was all square.
The
final three holes saw both players take advantage of the others
mistakes. After
Szewczul hit his second shot in the hazard on sixteen, Karakashian
made a remarkable fifty foot putt to go one up with two to play.
Greg pulled his third shot on seventeen left and again
could not get up and down. Szewczul
would go on to make a par and the match was all square on the
eighteenth tee. Both
players hit the fairway on eighteen but Karakashian’s second
found the right bunker. After
Szewczul’s fourth was conceded Greg had a twelve footer for par.
His putt found the center of the hole and the match was
headed to extra holes.
The
final hole would end just as the first hole had.
Greg’s second shot stopped in the collection area to the
left of the green. His
third shot went off the back of the green and after failing to
hole out with his fourth, he conceded the hole and the match to
Szewczul.
Dave Szewczul finds
himself in a similar position as last year; back on top of the
Senior Player of the Year leader board after earning 250 points
for his first place finish. Karakashian
will earn 200 for his runner-up finish.
The CSGA would like to thank Gillette Ridge Golf Course and
MDM Golf Enterprises for their support and hospitality throughout
the week.
